Why Buy Handmade?
You support a person rather than supporting a corporation
When you buy from a small business, you’re supporting a human being. Their hopes and dreams. Their family. Their livelihood. It doesn’t get swallowed up into the pockets of billionaires. It goes to a person just like you that’s actively chasing their wildest dreams.
It’s unique
When you buy handmade, you are getting one of a kind works of art. Even among the same product, there will always be tiny quirks/happy little accidents that make that product unique and special. It’s cool to buy handmade!
The quality will almost always be higher
Because small businesses usually aren’t mass producing items to cut costs and production times, they will produce higher quality items. Artisans are always on a quest to find the very highest quality products you can buy. We want to get the nicest materials and make the most beautiful, useful, thoughtful, quality, well-made product you can find on the market. Take advantage of our desire to be the best! We’ll do everything we can to bring you the very best work possible.
You support the local economy
Shopping on Amazon does next to nothing to support your local economy. Shopping at local, small businesses keeps your money close to home. It boosts the families that are living around you. It makes it possible for all of the unique, family-owned businesses in your area to stay open. When you shop locally, you help your community thrive. And if you do choose to shop at a small business online that’s not in your area, you’re still supporting a family’s individual household and their community. It’s a win-win.
It keeps artistry and craftsmanship alive
Ever since the Industrial revolution, artistry and craftsmanship have been under attack. Machinery and big business have been helpful in innovation, but have also really hurt small businesses and artistry along the way. People often prefer to go to a Hobby Lobby to find cheap, mass-produced wall art rather than looking for an artist’s work near them. Ikea has become the go-to for cheap, convenient furniture items which leaves less room in the market for skilled woodworkers.
Of course, super affordable things have their place in the world. Not everyone can afford to purchase high end, custom items. However, it’s always better if we can try to purchase from an artist because it keeps those special techniques and methods alive. If we don’t support our artists, they will no longer have the funds and demand to continue creating. Imagine how sad the world would be without any handmade goods!
It’s more sustainable
When someone purchases a handmade item, they are much less likely to throw it away easily. We realize the care, time, and value put into handmade items a lot more than some cheap thing we purchase from a supermarket. That means that fewer items will be thrown away, which leads to less waste.
It’s better for the environment
Small businesses are often doing work by hand to keep their costs low. They aren’t using huge factories, buying items in bulk, and mass producing things to cut costs. Lower production costs often mean worse conditions for workers, less environmentally friendly practices, and cut corners in quality to keep prices cheap. The poorer countries that are providing cheap labor keeps them trapped in a cycle of a struggling economy. It harms the environments where the factories are. It also oftentimes leads to a lot of waste from overbuying and disposing of leftover product that is no longer “in style.” Small businesses usually purchase only what they need. Not every small business is taking measures to be more sustainable, but most do.
We are literally in our studios late and night doing things by hand to keep things affordable for us and you. Because we aren’t creating huge assembly lines, it keeps our work more environmentally friendly. Work done by hand takes less energy than a mass production assembly line, which makes it more environmentally sustainable. If products are produced overseas, this also creates issues with shipping things overseas.
Handmade products are filled with love and care
This one honestly makes me a little emotional. As an artist, I can’t even begin to describe to you how much love and time and effort and spoons go into making my work. It takes so much of my emotion and energy and thought to create a beautiful product that I’m proud enough to share with the world. When you put your own artwork out there, it literally feels like sharing a little piece of your soul.
I know that I’m not alone. Artists and craftsmen all over the world are pouring their hearts into their work. We labor over our easels and work tables to bring you all of the beauty that only creativity can bring. We strive to make the world a little more beautiful through each item we make. When you hold a handmade item, I hope you can remember how much care and though went into each brushstroke, thread, cut. We do it for you. We do it for us. It feed our souls. I believe that artwork feeds the world and everyone who is lucky enough to see it and own it.
I hope that this reminds you about some of the reasons for why buying handmade goods is so important! Next time you have an urge to hop on Amazon, maybe go to Etsy instead… or even better, go and find the artist’s website and purchase from them directly. I can guarantee you that you’ll make someone’s day!
XOXO,
